Freelance Writing with Laura Pennington

SUMMARY:

In this week’s episode of the Sailing to Success Podcast Show, Lyndsay Phillips interviews Laura Pennington. Laura is a former seventh grade teacher that left her career to pursue her dream of becoming a online freelance writer. She now helps other people launch their online careers.

MAIN QUESTIONS ASKED:

  • What made you decide to switch careers?
  • Where do you start to get online?
  • How do people figure what services you’re offering?
  • How did you deal with scalability?
  • What do you mean by freelancing?
  • Is there a freelancing platform you prefer?
  • How do you help people achieve their goals?

KEY LESSONS LEARNED:

Careers

  • Most people are afraid to follow their gut when the path they have chosen doesn’t feel like a good fit.
  • Education can sometimes feel like a sunk cost, but there is always time to pivot and change direction.

Freelancing

  • The most important thing is getting clients. Finding the first one is by far the hardest.
  • You can start part time and then grow the business from there.
  • Your offer should be something you have experience in or something you are passionate about and are willing to learn.
  • Your prices aren’t set for life, you can always change them later.
  • Avoiding the feast or famine mindset, keep marketing and make sure you have clients all year round.
  • Know your limit and what kind of workload you can handle. Plan ahead.
  • Freelancing is more than writing content, there are a ton of opportunities out there.
  • Freelancing is becoming more common, businesses are becoming more comfortable with hiring people they have never met and may never actually see.
  • Set realistic goals initially and give yourself small wins. Celebrate and set new goals when you pass them.
  • You will learn from your past experience, that’s how you hone your offering and really learn what you want to do.

Finding Work

  • Upwork is the biggest platform at the moment.
  • Your profile needs to be succinct and compelling. Your first paragraph should be enough to get the person to want to know more.
  • Narrow down your offering.
  • Anyone can bid for jobs, your proposal is how you stand out from the crowd.
  • Upwork will protect your payment through an escrow system.
  • Your profile rate should roughly match your value but you should tailor your bid to the project.
  • Use a picture of you, not a logo, on your profile.
  • Be open to working for different clients on different projects, you may find something you really like to do that you didn’t think would be good and you can discover what you don’t want to do as well.

Final Tips

  • Don’t be afraid to pivot in your career.
  • Freelancing can be done part time, if you don’t like it you can drop it easier than a part time job.
  • Freelancing is a great way to build a business and meet new people.
  • Focus on getting clients first before anything else.
